Boundaries For Enablers

  • If you agree to help, ask them how they plan to handle their problem in the future.

  • Acknowledge and tell them ways that you are willing and unwilling to help.

  • Ask yourself if the way you’re helping them the most effective.

  • Assess your reason for wanting to help them.

  • Wait for people to request help before stepping in to assist.

  • Agree to help on a time-limited basis.

  • If you have become a continuous source of rescuing develop an exit-strategy.

  • Encourage people to consider support outside of you.

  • Explore whether you are able to help them without causing harm to yourself.
